I am a 43 year old who just got back into boarding. I used to skate and surf in the 80's growing up and my how things have changed. My 10 year old son said all his friends has skateboards and he wanted one for his birthday - so I picked up a Landyatchz Dingy Tug Boat last month - and in teaching him how to ride I could not believe how smooth, grippy and freeing it felt compared to what I had back then. (I had a loaded Madrid 30 years ago) It was that addictive feeling all over again. The technology feels and is light years ahead of what it used to be. Hell, I felt bad because I was riding it more than my kid was. My wife of 17 years said " I had no idea I married a skater boy".
Anyway, I decided to get a longboard so we could board together. I was worried about getting a flexy board as I was used to shorter stiff boards and I am a fat ass now -5'8 and 195lbs. This 44" Landyachtz Fiberglass Pinner has no problem for my weight. I didn't really plan on doing tricks other than shove it's, manuals, ollies and hard core slides -Kidding. I just wanted to cruise and carve.
This board is great. It is just pure fun- Feels exceptionally surfy/snowboardy - it has great return to center and yet has a very confidence inspired stable feeling. And although longer and bigger than the dingy it is lighter and is easy to carry. Bamboo vs maple. I do slight hills and flat areas. I am not dropping into bowls with this....yet. I had it configured with 70mm mini monster hawgs 78a(very grippy), 180mm Paris trucks and a 1/8" shock pad riser. To my surprise and despite the longer wheelbase this thing carves a turn slightly tighter or as tight as the dingy (pintail shape?bear vs paris trucks?) Rocks and bark chips, pavement cracks etc. that used to send me flying off the board in the 80's, are no problem. The board glides over them. And my knees which I have had problems with in the past do not hurt after a session of riding. It is low impact exercise I suppose and I have lost 5 lbs. in about 10 days. And that's with consuming the wonderful beer available here in Portland. (not at the same time of course)
The pintail is mainly for looks - and while you can use it as a kick -it is really 10% functional compared to the kick on a shorter dingy style board. However I don't use it for tricks and just wanted the carving cruising free feeling and it does that in spades. Plus the wood grain looks classy - if you are into that sort of thing.
So - Great longboard for anyone - and more engaging than cycling or running and cheaper and far more accessible than surfing or snowboarding- and I get that great sense of focus, balance and fun that makes you say - Let's do that again!!
Haven't said this in decades but I am stoked. It's Bitchin.
