The Portland City Council is considering an ordinance to
ban skateboarding on selected streets in Portland's West Hills.

There is an agenda item scheduled for the June 27, 2012 City Council meeting to “Amend Skateboard Code” and we encourage you to speak up in a constructive way!

We encourage you to reach out to the Portland City Commissioners in a constructive fashion. The residents of the West Hills have reasonable concerns. However, the proposed ban won’t help.

The City Council needs to hear from their skateboarding constituents like you. Portland is known for their progressive skateboarding laws and it has contributed to the vibrant skating scene that we all enjoy. We need to convince the Commissioners that a ban will not solve the safety issues that have prompted this ordinance change. As quoted in the Portland Mercury article, "a responsible and respectful skateboard community" is going to be the best way to increase safety! We all know that bans don't stop skateboarding, or any other behavior for that matter. They only increase confrontation, demand city resources and put skateboarders at odds with their community.

Here is what we recommend you do:
Email Mayor Sam Adams and the Portland City Commissioners and voice your opposition to skateboarding bans. If you are under 18, encourage your parents to contact the Commissioners as well. Contact information is below. You can email all of the Commissioners.
If you will not have the opportunity to write your own email, here is some suggested text you can copy and paste:

EXAMPLE EMAIL:

Dear Commissioner:
I am writing to oppose the proposed amendment to the Skateboard Code. An active skateboard community is one of the things that makes Portland special. A ban would not only diminish Portland’s vibrancy, it would be counterproductive. Bans don't stop skateboarding. They only increase confrontation, demand city resources and put skateboarders at odds with their community. Skateboarding would only become less safe as more people are likely to rebel if a ban is put in place.

Most of the West Hllls skaters are riding longboard skateboards. Safe riding is a core part of longboarding. The vast majority of riders wear protective gear. Of course, there are accidents from time to time. However, there are accidents in all sports, including bicycle riding.
Similarly, the vast majority of riders are respectful of the places they ride. Longboarders take great pride in appreciating and taking care of the places in which they skate.

I respectfully ask you to oppose the proposed amendment.

Thank you for your consideration.
